DSN Club Members Explore Living With Diabetes
The DSN Club offers Christa McAuliffe students a variety of activities: Art, Comics, Crafts, Culinary Arts, Digital Storytelling, F2F Gatherings, Genius Hour, Maker Spaces, Music, Non-Computer Games, Sports, Technology (Coding, Game Design, Web Design), and Travel. Tuesday, November 24th, was a Culinary Arts day.
Ms. Yeager and the Leadership Class brought Diabetes Awareness to the forefront of Christa McAuliffe Middle School's attention during our 2nd Quarter Spirit Week. As the DSN Club put a new spin on Marshmallow Lollipops, http://goo.gl/U7R7vY, Noah Smith helped his fellow club members learn that "Sugar Free" does not always mean there's no sugar, or that it's a good food choice. He said that sugary treats like we typically use as rewards also include carbohydrates. Therefore, we also need to talk about "Gluten Free."
To help everyone understand what diabetes is, Students watched a Discovery Education video about Diabetes, https://goo.gl/DBIQIY. As club members talked about the impact of sugar on our lives, they talked about sugary drinks. There are quite a few Youtube videos that show how much sugar is in Coca-cola. Here are two of the club favorites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZqbxhI6eBU and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNW6VpiGH_c. The DSN Club Marshmallow Shish-Kabobs turned out pretty good with their mix of sugar and "Sugar Free" ingredients: marshmallows, Fruit Loops, sprinkles, Graham Crackers, "Sugar Free" chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, caramel syrup, "Sugar Free" Lifesavers, and "Sugar Free" Red Vines. While everyone finds it quite challenging to "cook" in a classroom. The DSN Club is making progress and know more about classmates and friends with special dietary considerations. Another success for DSN Club; use critical thinking skills to do something extraordinary.
The DSN Club was formed to provide students a learning community that goes beyond the our campus and the school day. Within the club, students explore their "Genius Hour" passions and connect with students worldwide via Discovery Education and Discovery Student Network.
Similarly, DSN Club Alumni was formed to provide students a high school learning community that goes beyond the Lodi Unified and the school day. Alumni members continue to explore their "Genius Hour" passions and connect with students worldwide via Discovery Education and Discovery Student Network. The club alumni are always welcome at the weekly DSN Club meetings as they provide mentoring to the 7th and 8th grade members. Due to busy high school schedules, the alumni group will officially meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month and as passion projects dictate.
On the right-hand navigation, you can see the DSN Club Passions. If you don't see your passion, please join and add it to the list. Every is welcome in the DSN Club.
